3/28/2013 1 Comment Meet Kelly MartinWelcome Kelly, I'm so glad you could visit. I just have a few questions for you today. How long have you been writing? I can’t remember when I didn’t write. I used to write fan fiction (yep… anyone else want to admit to it? I LOVED it.). That gave me the confidence to write my first novel with my own characters. It was great. I’ve been addicted ever since. What was the inspiration behind SAINT SLOAN? I was watching an episode of The O.C. and there is a scene that inspired this novel. It’s not a fan fiction by any means. It doesn’t even have the same characters or anything and honestly the situations are very different. However, I got a thought in my mind of a girl on the road, picked up by this handsome stranger. I wanted to know about them and so I wrote the novel. This book touches a very difficult subject, sexual assault. How difficult was it to write? Very difficult! Not just the assault, but the aftermath and the hospital were very hard.. mainly because I knew my mama would read it (I didn’t want to get into graphic detail). I tried my best to walk a line between facts and things the audience didn’t need to ‘see’. Plus it’s a ‘clean fiction’ novel so I had to walk that rope a little more closely. Do you ever get attached to any of your characters? Yes! All the time. I’m sure it doesn’t seem that way because I tend to put my characters through the ringer, but I’m very attached to them all. Have you ever written a love triangle before? How different is it than just plain duo romance to write? No, I haven’t. It’s harder because each ‘couple’ has their own emotional line. They interact differently and have a different chemistry. When you only have your two main characters, it’s easier to plot a through line for them. But triangles are so fun to write! I loved the challenge. Speaking of ‘love triangles’ will Sloan choose between Aaron and Ray? Hmmmm…. Where do you see your characters a month after the end of the book? Not to give the ending away, but it’s very traumatic for Sloan. She won’t be in the best place ever at the beginning of the next novel. That’s always fun for an author to write J Give us a DVD commentary deleted scene or behind the scenes fact about the book that didn’t make the final cut? Let’s see… in the original first draft, Donna died (in the published novel, she’s in a nursing home). I brought her back to ‘life’ because I thought Sloan might need someone later on to talk too. And her mom was WAY more overbearing in the first draft. She mellowed before publication. What would you love your readers to know? You mean the world to me! I couldn’t do this without you. Your enthusiasm over SAINT SLOAN makes me excited about the sequels. Thank you guys so much! ~*~*~*~ BACK COVER BLURB: When Sloan Bridges is seventeen years and three hundred, sixty-four days old, her dream of having a perfect birthday is shattered. Home alone after spending the afternoon working on a sci-ence project at the new boy’s house, Sloan is brutally attacked in her kitchen by a man she can’t recognize. The only clue she has to go on is what he whispers in her ear, “You deserve this.” The police have one suspect—Aaron Hunter, older brother of ‘the new boy’, who picked Sloan up a few nights before as she ran from a party. Adamant that he didn’t do it, Aaron begs Sloan to believe him. For her part, Sloan doesn’t know who to trust. She never saw her attacker’s face, and when she does picture it, it’s Aaron’s face she sees standing over her. Trying to move on is impossible with a former best friend who taunts her and gives her the moniker, “Saint Sloan”, an ex-boyfriend who doesn’t understand why she changed a few months before her attack, and Aaron’s brother, Ray, who makes Sloan smile but has a side she doesn’t understand. With her attacker ready to strike again, Sloan has to figure out who would hurt her and stop him before he finishes what he started. Title & Cover Reveal for
the first Write to Read Project Title: The Struggle of Me Write to Read Project, #1 Expected Publication: March 23, 2013 Genre: YA Contemporary Synopsis: After the death of their parents, Derrick and Arriane are whisked away to Maine to live with their aunt. Years later, they find themselves back in their small hometown of Cooper’s Pointe, and residing with their older brother, Lucas. What neither of them knew was that Lucas, who was already slowly heading towards self-destruction when they left, had become far worse than they, or their aunt, could have expected. Skylar is popular. The idea of popularity has consumed her for years, but the stigma of her past continues to haunt her. When the handsome bully from her younger years- and ex-best friend- comes back into town with a slew of problems of his own, Skylar has to consider her options: get revenge, or learn to forgive? The Struggle of Me is a touching story highlighting the individual pains of Derrick, Arriane, Skylar, and Lucas. Will they defeat the obstacles that hinder them or will they be defeated by the struggles that bind them? Authored By (in alphabetical order): Ressa Empbra, Adeeb F., Wanda Hartzenberg, Alishia Ruly, Chamera Sampson, Tanisha Webb, Diara Williams About: The Struggle of Me is the first project by Write To Read. The idea for Write to Read came to Chamera Sampson’s mind at the end of 2011. Immediately, she decided to try to develop an inkling of an idea into something more. What Write to Read Does: Write to Read started with the idea that everyone has the right to read something they would enjoy. Unfortunately, many people do not have the resources to do so. Write to Read is dedicated to donating money and other related resources to the causes that directly aid literacy development and an interest in reading to people around the world. How, you may ask? Well, each project is started with volunteers to write. The Struggle of Me started as an idea to have multiple people taking turns writing on a solitary short story to be published as an electronic book. Hence, the name Write to Read. We believe the story, which quickly transformed into more of a novella, is a great one. Where Proceeds Go: Two years’ proceeds for Write to Read project #1 will be donated to Reading is Fundamental. Any proceeds made after will fund a future project. |
